Finally, it is here for us to realize that India should move from the hangover of cricket to other sports. Beijing, as it would go down in the history as a venue for XXIXth Olympics, but for India which won its first individual gold in the 108 years history of the games, it will go down as what can be termed "Dream Come True".
Carrying expectation of billion plus countrymen it is never easy to perform at such a big stage, you need to have nerves of steel. The man of the moment, Abhinav Bindra is the one who brought laurels to nearly a billion and given them a self belief that there are other games to look forward than the 22 yards involving 22 men. Bindra, with an immaculate shot of 10.8 in the final round of the 10 m air rifle Monday, bagged the first individual Olympic gold medal for India. In what is to be believed as one of the most thrilling and engaging finals in the history of the games, he surpassed Qinan Zhu (CHN) and Henri Hakkinen (FIN) who won Sliver and Bronze respectively.
This is a very positive sign for the days to come where in each and every sport needs to get a look in by the government. The cricket crazy nation should learn to respect the value of other sports. This win should be treated as a individual not where our politicians are ready to have their share in the pie. The euphoria will slowly and steadily settle down but what we should not forget is that this is the just the beginning and if we ever dream of hosting an Olympics in India we should have contestants to get the medals.
